The Kilcher Family: Surviving Off the Land in Alaska
Four Generations of Kilchers
On a 600-acre homestead outside Homer, Alaska, four generations of the Kilcher family live off the land. They must hunt, garden, gather, raise livestock, and work together as a family in order to survive. The Kilchers have been featured on the reality TV show "Alaska: The Last Frontier" since 2011.
Facing Challenges
With another brutal winter approaching and bears having killed two of the family's cattle, the Kilchers are forced to pin all of their hopes on a successful hunting season. However, the weather on the homestead has become more unpredictable than ever, and the Kilchers must strike back against a rapidly changing Alaskan wilderness.
Despite the challenges, the Kilchers remain committed to their way of life. They believe that living off the land is the best way to raise a family and that it teaches them valuable life lessons. "We're not just trying to survive," says Atz Kilcher, the patriarch of the family. "We're trying to thrive."
