Hugh Freeze Named Head Coach at Auburn University
53-Year-Old Former High School Standout Replaces Fired Bryan Harsin
New Tigers Athletics Director John Cohen Culminates Coaching Search
Auburn University has named Hugh Freeze as its 31st head football coach, replacing Bryan Harsin who was fired earlier this season following a disappointing 6-6 campaign. Freeze, a 53-year-old native of Oxford, Mississippi, brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Plains, having previously served as a highly successful high school coach at Briarcrest Christian and as head coach at both Ole Miss and Liberty University.
A five-time Region 8-AA Coach of the Year and four-time Associated Press High School Coach of the Year, Freeze led Briarcrest Christian to three state championships and a 104-11 record during his tenure. He joined Ole Miss in 2012, where he compiled a 39-25 record and led the Rebels to two bowl victories before being forced to resign in 2017 due to off-field conduct.
Freeze spent the last four seasons at Liberty, where he posted a 34-15 record and led the Flames to their first-ever bowl victory. He is known for his aggressive, up-tempo offensive style and has a reputation for developing talented quarterbacks.
