Going Inside the Democratic National Convention With a Jefferson County Delegate
Beverly Hatcher Takes a Ringside Seat to History
Chicago Community leader Beverly Hatcher will have a front-row seat to history as an alternate delegate from Jefferson County to the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC).
Hatcher is one of 3,950 delegates who will help decide the Democratic nominee for president.
The Delegate Process
The Democratic National Convention is a quadrennial event that brings together delegates from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories to nominate the party's presidential and vice presidential candidates.
Delegates are chosen through a series of caucuses and primaries held in each state.
The number of delegates each state gets is based on its population and the results of the previous presidential election.
Hatcher's Role
As an alternate delegate, Hatcher will have the opportunity to participate in all of the convention's activities, including the platform debates, the nomination speeches, and the final vote on the party's nominees.
Hatcher says she is excited to be a part of this historic event.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," she said.
"I'm honored to represent Jefferson County and to have a say in who the next president of the United States will be."
Jefferson County's First Delegate
Hatcher is the first person from Jefferson County to be a delegate to a national political convention.
She says she hopes her experience will inspire others in her community to get involved in the political process.
"I want to show people that anyone can make a difference," she said.
"No matter where you come from or what your background is, you can get involved in politics and make your voice heard."
