Aircraft Crash Near Schaumburg Airport Leaves Two Dead

Schaumburg, IL -

Two fatalities have been reported after an aircraft crashed near Irving Park Rd near Schaumburg Regional Airport Sunday evening.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the two deceased as John J. Kunz Jr, 47, of Bloomingdale, and Thomas A. Johnson, 49, of Chicago. Preliminary reports indicate that the plane, a Cessna 172 Skyhawk, crashed shortly after taking off from Schaumburg Regional Airport. Authorities have not yet released the cause of the crash, but an investigation is ongoing by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

According to the preliminary investigation, the plane went down at approximately 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening in a field near Irving Park Rd. Witnesses reported seeing the plane flying low before it crashed and burst into flames. Firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. The two occupants of the plane were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also launched an investigation into the crash. The NTSB will be responsible for determining the cause of the crash and making recommendations to prevent similar accidents in the future. The investigation is expected to take several months to complete.
