Bondar upset Pera in the US Open first round
Hungarian qualifier Anna Bondar upset American Bernarda Pera 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the 2024 US Open.
Bondar broke Pera's serve five times, including twice in the deciding set. She also won 70% of her first-serve points and saved 7 of 10 break points she faced.
Pera struggled with serve
Pera had 10 double faults, including two in the final game.
She also hit 25 unforced errors and did not convert any of her two break-point opportunities.
Bondar advances to second round
Bondar will face 15th-seeded Caroline Garcia in the second round.
Garcia defeated Heather Watson 6-3, 6-2 in her first-round match.
